DST63504 [Introduction of Pattern Drafting and Garment Making] - Week 6
Hello hello, it's Jelly here. This week was quite a fun week. During the end of week 5 though, we were tasked to draw the men's pants block and the men's shirt block. We were given the measurements for the men's shirt block from Ms Melina in the group chat and I tried to transfer the measurements into my graphing paper so that I can understand it better. I was initially confused with it. It looked as though it was similar with the notes on the G-drive (where every task reference and guidance were saved for us to see) but then I realized that the front and back would look different if I were to fold on the center line. After that realization, though, it wasn't as hard as it was during week 1 as I have grown accustomed to it.
As for the pants block, I took it's measurement from the notes in G-drive. It looked easier than the women's pants block in my opinion (because it didn't look like it has a lot of curves) and I redrew it on a graphing paper. It went well, I guess, except that I felt unsure of the calculations so I just had to wait for Ms Melina's feedback.
I went to the studio earlier than was supposed on schedule to start ironing the skirt sewing task. I do not know how Ms Melina got the curve for the skirt but I felt that mine was limp haha. But at least there's no crease. I also ironed the interfacing onto the skirt for the zipper area after confirming that the shiny part (the glue) should be facing the fabric. Then, I gave Ms Melina the Men's Shirt and Pants block. She told me where I did wrong, the length of the scye depth and the pants were a bit larger than it was supposed to. But it got marked, yay. I will certainly draw a new one now that Ms Melina has gave the correct measurements in group, alongside a casual shirt block.
When class started, Ms Melina showed us how to properly sew a zipper on the fabric. We prepared an A4 calico and divided into 2. Then, we sew overlock stitches on the sides of the calico for the sipper to be sewn at. Before sewing the sipper, though, we have to iron the zipper. Not to mention, we also have to change the footer of the sewing machine so that we will be able to sew the zipper.
After everything is prepared, we need to pin the zipper onto the fabric carefully. Not gonna lie, though, if I was not paying attention to how Ms Melina pin the zipper, I would've done it wrong and be bamboozled by it. Then I just sew it, until the 2 cm mark on the sipper near the end. It was a really fascinating work to do. I love how the zipper would go through the footer. I definitely enjoyed doing that better than regular sewing (?) haha. Right after, we have to sew the rest of the fabric using the other (normal) stitching footer and there's that.
While I did my work in quite a slow motion, because I wanted it to look good... in the end result, there was quite a slant, but that was my first attempt on a trial test. So it wasn't that bad, I guess. Now, I just have to do it on the real skirt that I was doing... which ended up a big fail because I wasn't paying attention on where I was sewing it. And that was the end of the day for Tuesday. Since class ended, I just had to open the sewing to redo it all over again, which I did on Thursday.
On Thursday, I re-pinned the zipper onto the fabric, correctly, after thoroughly making sure that it indeed was the right side to do it. Then I just sew it just the way I did for the trial test. After the zipper is sewn onto the fabric, with the rest of the fabric sewn as well, I attached the front and back part of the skirt together, and voila, I am almost done with it!
Next I just have to stitch an overlock on the hem and sew it after. I had a bit of an issue while doing so because I blundered a bit by not separating the seams. It eventually became quite a mess with the hem. While it wasn't as fine as I want it to be, I felt like I was running out of hems to sew if I wanted to fix it for a second time haha TT. In the end, I did cut a tiny bit to separate the seams and eventually sewed the hem by 1 cm, because I didn't have enough for three.
Despite all of the problems I had while attempting to sew the skirt, I think I did quite well. Sure, if you only looked at the inside, it would look a bit messy, but the end result is quite alright. So the week itself is kinda rewarding for me because I finally (almost) completely sew a skirt from scratch :3. I ran out of time on Thursday as well so I wasn't able to progress on the belt area but I've told Ms Melina that I would do it next week, since the overlock machine broke as well. So... I can't wait to look forward to that, as well as making a blouse for the first time, I hope.
Toodaloo!
