DST63504 [Introduction of Pattern Drafting and Garment Making] - Week 8
Hi, it's Jelly here. Can't believe it's week 8 already :D. I started the week by trying to continue drawing the shirt block so that I would be able to cut it out to sew the shirt later on. Since I have a limited set of rulers, though, I tried to make it look as precise as it can but truly, without the right rulers, you wouldn't be getting anything right TT.
I did everything already except for the armhole and neck part because of insufficient ruler. It was too weird for me to use the hip ruler so I really have to buy the armhole ruler, but for now I'm just going to borrow it from Yumna or Josephine again.
But when I arrive for class on Thursday though, there was a slight change of plans. Since we were approaching the end of the semester real soon, Ms Melina told us to start cutting the shirt parts by using the cardboard blocks she had prepared. So we cut them, just like she told us to. At least now I'm rest assured that everyone would have the same measurements unlike the skirts so I have less worrying to do hahaha.
We worked through for an hour or two, cutting the fabric using the guide of the cardboard blocks, because we would also have to wait in line for the blocks as there were only 2 sets of it while there were a lot of us working with it. Then, whilst we're still midway working on it, Ms Melina presented us on how to do the shirt. So first, she told us to cut out pieces of interfacing for the button plackets (2x), pocket, and collar. Next she told us to iron it carefully onto the shirt and voila, you can now start sewing by sewing the darts on the bodice block.
I went to do that, but since Yumna had asked me for the interfacing she also helped cut mine so I only have to iron them. I also overlocked both sides of the shirt blocks, the top of the pocket (that has interfacing) and the sleeves. After that, I sewed the darts on the shirt before proceeding to the pocket, which is a part that I'm confused at so I went and asked Ms Melina for help. She demonstrated it to me while also marking the position of the pocket onto the barely-a-shirt block haha.
First I have to iron the pocket by folding it on the allowance line, fold the top of the pocket that has an interfacing and then sew it. Next, I started to sew pockets onto the shirt. I started from the right, going 0,5 cm from the end, stuck 1 finger onto the pocket so that it has room, and proceed to sew it till the end of it's left. It was a bit of a frustrating process, though. I was using a different sewing machine as everything is full already, and the sewing it created was so loose. I have no idea why it does that, but it definitely made it look a bit ugly TT.
But at the time, I didn't know that I was sewing it wrong. Process was right but execution was wrong, as per the QnA sesh with Yumna. I had to start sewing it with a small curve on the edge then proceed to sew it 0,2 cm away from the sides, then follow it up till the other side, where you have to end it with a small curve as well. It was the end of the class though, so I decided to just go back home and maybe fix it on another day, preferably Thursday.
I didn't get to, though, as I started to feel a bit sick on Wednesday till Friday. So maybe I'll get to fix it next week, hopefully. See ya on the next week!
